I really don't know why society is like it is, people now a days say ugly things because one they are either jealous or just don't have no heart. I suffered with an eating dissorder in High school and still deal with one time to time. I am not as bad as i use to be, but I grew up with guys calling me Amazon girl. because I am 5'10 and was usually taller and bigger than most of the boys in my school. It really hurts kids when people make fun of their appearance, because school is pretty much a popularity contest. That's why we need to install in our kids how wonderful they are fat, skinny, freckles, not so smart or inbetween. It is so hard growing up in this world today. So just love your neighbor and the person beside you and just wonder how they feel or if you were in there shoes. God loves them and sees them the same exact way as he sees everyone else. He don't judge so why should we.

People are fascinated with appearance in society - mostly regarding finding a mate, and how you are perceived. In a lot of cases, someone who is good looking and well groomed will have an easier time finding a good job, and dealing with day to day life. This doesn't necessarily mean that just because someone is beautiful that they won't have problems - especially when they get older and their 'beauty' fades. Since there are as many different definitions of 'beauty' as there are people, then there really isn't one definition of what 'beautiful' means. There are some factors that people agree on, but as the old saying goes: 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'.

It's a good idea to stay in decent shape, you will be healthier, and feel much better about yourself, but just because you are overweight does not necessarily preclude you from being beautiful. A lot of a persons beauty is on the inside - let it show!!!

I think appearance is important. Dressing well (for your body type), along with taking care of your hair and skin, are vital and they send a very strong message. When you feel that you look good, it elevates your self confidence. Self confidence gives you empowerment in a variety of situations and can send a message of competence, particularly in the workplace.

I don't agree to conforming to a certain standard of being thin. Many cultures find a round figure more attractive than a skinny one. And the face of a gooddess can have many interpretations.

Humans are fascinated by beauty, and there's nothing wrong with that. As long as we take care of ourselves and don't become obsessive about attaining a certain ideal, then it can be perfectly healthy.

I don't think society does. I think the media does that and everyone follows the leader. When I say "media" I refer to magazines, newspapers, television and radio. If we could get these all to concur that beauty is only skin deep, we might get somewhere as a society. Until then, we are hopelessly doomed to look at the head turners rather than the plain and ordinary people.

A lot of people judge on those kind of things... I try to judge on appearance only at first glance -can't hand out a questionair when entering a room full of people or when deciding where to sit on the train, can I? :)- but I try not to let it affect me beyond that... when I'm talking to someone I'll let their personality and behaviour overrule anything I thought in those first few moments, if I don't like them I'll walk off no matter how cool they look and if I like them and they don't look so good I'll quickly forget... People who can't do that, who can't see beyond first glance, are the shallow kind I have little use for.

.....because society, like it or not, judges a book by its cover.

Why?

Human nature--society isn't able to read one's personality at face value. Takes time to get to know someone, but ppl are such that it takes a mili-second to size someone up and make a judgement.

Sad, but true.

Survival of the fittest.

Blame it on the Free Market!

Its all those money making businesses and fashion industries.

They exist to make a PROFIT and dont actually care about peoples self esteem etc

It's not today's society, it's always been that way!! For example...if you are in the grocery store and looking at fruit, are you going to buy the nicest looking one, or the bruised one thinking it will taste just as good...HUMMMMM?

Not any more than has ever been done. The only difference I can think of now is that the media has made "beauty" impossible by manipulating the pictures that we see.
