MY DOGS LEFT PAW IS A LITTLE BIT SMALLER THEN THE RIGHT PAW. IN THE GRASS MY DOG SHOWS NO DISCOMFORT. HE RUNS, JUMPS AND PLAYS WITH THE OTHER 2 DOGS WITH NO PROBLEMS. BUT ONCE HE STARTS WALKING ON HARD GROUND HE LIMPS, OR DOESN'T USE IT AT ALL. WHEN YOU FEEL HIS PAW, BETWEEN HIS OUTER PINKY (I GUESS YOU CALL IT) AND THE TOE NEXT TO IT YOU CAN FEEL SOMETHING THERE.....LIKE A CYST TYPE OF FEELING THAT YOU GET ON YOUR ARM. BEFORE EVERYONE STARTS "GO TO THE VET..." I'VE GONE TOO 2. WE'VE DONE X-RAYS AND NOTHING HAD SHOWN UP. WHAT I NEED IS SOMEONE WHO MIGHT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM OR CLOSE TO IT TO TELL ME WHAT THE OUT COME FOR THEM WAS. I LOVE MY DOG........ALL 3 OF THEM, PLEASE GIVE ME SOME IDEAS!!!!

Well to everyone who answered thank you very much. since posting i have gone to see a 3rd vet. He has concluded that the paw has a disformity (i think i spelt it right). The pad has fused together between the 2 toes. what is causing him to limp is that after a while (running, playing, jumping...etc) a little crack occures which will cause him discomfort. The lump is there becuse that is where he puts most of his weight on. that explains why it is thougher in that area. you could apply preasure to area without causing discomfort only in the early part of the day. After the crack opens a bit that is when he'll pull away. So, what can help Rex???
The vet suggested "tough paw" which a cream to help the paw while walking or on pavement. Booties in the cold and/or while walking and swimming to help his muscles and keep his shoulder and other parts working as normale as possible.

Oh my gosh, 2 vets & x-rays but they don't know what it is??? I don't now what it could be , but we had a dog who had some type of rare nail fungus before and our vet had told us to put little socks (baby socks) on the dogs paws to help cusion the paws when it walked. It helped our dog walk better until his claws healed up. Hope this helps & Good Luck!

If x rays arent showing the vets nothing you might want to suggest a biopsy of that area. Being if it is the bone or skin. It is good that you have gone and got a 2nd opinion. I say try to locate a specialty hospital. They might know other things that the regular vets dont know. Something is going on being that he limps and it is a different size.
Good luck.

If his toe nails are too long that causes pain and causes them to fall back on the big pad on the back of his paw, instead of walking on his toes. That is called padding and can cause a misalignment of hips and shoulders. Check his nails.

There is give when he is on the lawn but hard surfaces long nails RAM/JAB the nail into the toe causing lots of pain.

Well, if YOU can feel something, why can't the Vet(s)? If you push on the 'cyst' does he pull away? If so, there is the trouble and you should go to another Vet and 'show' him what you are talking about. Good Luck!

sounds like you need a different opinion since two vets couldnt figure out what was wrong try another vet and before they ding you for x rays tell them to feel the spot and maybe they can figure it out once and for all. good luck.
