prone to uncharacteristic outbursts of anger for several years. Yesterday I took her to her dr. and he gave her medicine. The med said 'for Alzheimer's disease' and she is livid. I saw 'help and support' on my tool bar & thought maybe the answers community could give us some coping strategies or books for victims & their families. I want quality of life for her...tho she is not the same as before, she is my mother & I love her dearly.

If she was diagnosed with Alzheimer, there is very little you can do. Do a search in Google for "Alzheimer" and you will find much about what you have asked.

I'm an 81 year old male and have been taking Aricept for years. I was having memory problems too. I have not been diagnosed with Alzheimer's but several studies have shown that taking 5 mg a day helps your memory. I take it every day and it definitely helps my memory. Your mother should be happy to take the medication; there are virtually no side effects. If she has the disease, the medication will not cure it, but will help retard its progress. I am very active and have gone back to work part time. I am a professional volunteer, (we usher tonight at the Little Theater); we served a meal to 200 migrant workers yesterday, I work at two local Food Pantries, etc. She can sit and watch TV and slowly become totally disabled or she can get up and about. Taking her medication will definitely help.

I'm truly sorry to hear this, it is always horrible when a family member is diagnosed with such a debilitating condition.

The only thing you can do is with stand the outbursts and help her take her medicine. You may even have to put her in a home because it can be exceedingly difficult to care of someone with this problem. You need a full time nurse or a home to take care of her.

When someone has Alzheimer's they should be watched very often because they can easily become frightened and angry from confusing situations. She at times will not know you or anyone or even herself if she looks in the mirror. She'll thrown things, cuss like a sailor, cry uncontrollably or even try to commit suicide. You must seek out a program that can help you in taking care of her.

This is a hard thing to deal with and you must do it one day at a time. She may not know you at times, but she is worth all that effort.

When my grandmother was still alive, she had Alzheimers, and she would have outbursts like that. Not very often but she would have them.

If she's living alone, get her out of that situation. Alzheimer's does scary stuff to a person.

Just be good to your mother and remember to take a break every day from her for awhile, so you dont get worn out from being with her.
Lost my mother to Alzheimers disease when she was 60 and now my oldest sister has it.

My grandmother started doing that.....for example
She would forget that I have children....
or if she would remember she would think of my 5 year old still a baby and not talking......

We kind of shrug it off because if we correct her it upsets her...she's in denial...

Try to get her to take the medicine. If it helps great, if not she can discontinue taking it. Good Luck!
