Some people say 3 years, some people say 4? How many is it exactly?

They are only counted in the totting up process for three years but not removable from your licence for four years.Unless it's a drink driving endorsment which is eleven years.

Points for speeding remain on your licence and 'active' for 3 years (e.g. if you get any more points, they will be added to the ones you already have).

However, they cannot actually be removed from your licence for a further 12 months. You will then have to pay £19 to get the licence 'cleaned'. You can't do this until 4 years have passed from the date of the conviction.

3 years exactly. I know cos my 3 points are due off this May day for speeding on my bike on the local motorway. Yippeeeeeeeeeee

It's four years for most offences however it's 11 years for the following:

drinking/drugs and driving (shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80) or
causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs (shown on the licence as CD40, CD50 and CD60)or
causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis (shown on the licence as CD70).

Remember as well that your insurance company is going to ask you to declare any offences for 5 years.
