Unfortunately, different insurance companies follow different guidelines. The only way to have COBRA is if he had worked and is still paying his premiums out of pocket. Even then most COBRA plans do not extend beyond around 12 months. You would have to call your local health insurance companies and find out if they accept people who have 'pre-existing' conditions. There are some out there, it is a matter of your locale. Good luck.

About the only option for him is to go through your state department of insurance. Each state has an assigned health high risk pool that offers insurance for ppl than can not get any thru a health insurance company directly. Either that or try for some medical assistance through the Health and human services department for your area.

1st, let me apologise for the comment made by Marissa-that was uncalled for, offensive and just plain crude.
Unless your dad can afford Cobra, which is meant to cover a person between jobs and is very expensive, his best(& probably only) option is Medicaid (a state/federal partnership that provides disabled or low income people with health insurance for darn near free), or if he's older or judged as disabled by the state, he can get Medicare. There is a nationwide organization called The Little Red Door, which exists just for matters like this. They can direct you to medical resources, help you find a wig(if needed by cancer patient),& pretty much assist you with questions such as this, plus they'd be more familiar with what's in your area. Good luck.

He may be able to get insurance, but it won't cover preexisting conditions.
If he is working and the company offers insurance, I don't think he could be denied coverage. Check your State's Revised Statutes under its website, go into Legislature and Laws. Each state has it's own laws regulating insurance coverage.
Also, contact the American Cancer Society to see what information or contacts they may provide.
I wish you and your dad all the best.
He may have to use the public health care.

Yes, you should definitely call your county/state health office to see if he qualifies for public assistance. Your dad may qualify for Medicare depending on his age and income. Is he disabled? If yes, then he may also qualify for social security benefits. To get an idea of costs for insurance with a person with his medical history, you could try this site. http://insurance.divinfo.com/ There is a lot of info. here about insurance. Best wishes to you and your father!

There are organizations like the American Cancer Society that can provide information for you on issues like this. They are well versed and will be able to guide you.
I can point you to some websites with information about this issue.

If he can get a job that offers health insurance then I think they can't turn him down. My mother in law had cancer a few years ago and she just got a new job and had no problems getting on their insurance.

I suggest you to do some research like calling up well - known health insurances like Kaiser's Permeate, and Blue Cross Ask them for referring you to the people they know might have better sources to find to guide you on the right direction to this one you want.

You MAY be able to get insurance, but they will insert a rider into the policy that won't cover anything cancer-related. Your best bet is for him to sign away all his assets to you and apply for Medicare.
