Tell him that he can have both dreams. Let him know that you support his pro football career and will be there with him no matter what happens.

My gal Melrose is trying to get me to return to minor pro hockey because she loves to watch me play. She always gives me a great work-out in the bedroom after a game!

Considering your boyfriend's age, I highly encourage him to join a team on his local semi-pro football team next season. My best advice for your boyfriend is to work hard and perform very well in practice every day. In addition, what your boyfriend needs to do this (and every) offseason is eat healthy, exercise by doing weight lifting, and either jogging or going for a long run every day. If your boyfriend does these things, he will get faster, stronger, and into better shape, which will greatly improve his chances of being a successful, top notch semi-pro football player, who could go on to play in the NFL in the future.
