No, BUT....
You will notice that the inside of your microwave is metal but no sparking occurs, this is because only metal objects with sharp edges cause problems ie) if you put a fork in the microwave assuming the fork is rounded everywhere except for the prongs, you would only get sparking at the tips of the prongs due to the microwaves collecting at the prongs. The gold rimmed edges you get on some fancy plates/tea cups is a bad idea too.
If you ONLY put a metal object in your microwave then you can damage the microwave because metals reflect the microwaves and do not absorb them so the microwaves will reflect back into the magnetron (microwave generator) and cause damage.
Food inside a metal container will not heat because the microwaves cannot penetrate the metal and bounce off.
But, you can reheat a mug of tea in the microwave with the spoon still in!!

Safe for what?
It depends.
There are soup/meal cups that have a metal rim and are designed to be microwaveable.
It's generally considered a bad thing though. It could draw sparks/arcs from the radiating elements in the microwave which could either damage the surface or damage the circuitry.
If you're really interested, buy a cheap one from a secondhand store and experiment. Just stand back a bit. ;->

Putting any form of metal ( metal, steel, aluminum,or gold lined, silverlined dishes into the microwave will destroy your microwave. It will literally melt the door because it is plastic. You will know if you've put some kind of metal in it because you will literally see lightning flying around inside it. Don't do it unless your looking for a new microwave in which case enjoy the show.

No, if you put it in there it will look something like a lightning storm in the microwave and could make it explode. But either way your microwave will get ruined.

Some absorb too much microwave energy and get hot. This could cause cracking or melting, or release of stuff you wouldn't want to eat.

Nope, not safe at all. The microwave reflect on it and it will simply be mayhem inside there. You will break your oven, risk electrical short circuit, risk house fire.... Just don't man, DON"T !
