How is it too late??? Did you guys do somethings that crossed the line that he thinks there is a relationship?? You didnt give enough information.
My advice is this...be honest with him. Tell him that you want him in your life cause you like him but only as a friend. If he likes you he will understand and will stay as friends with you. If he canat handle being just friends though let him know you understand and respect his decision. Also let him know to call you in the future if he does want to hang out again.
