The family I just adopted a cat from sounded like they were calling him their "matza." Am I wrong on the pronunciation?

In Sarajevo, I used to hear "matchka" for cat or kitten. It was also slang for a female (like 'chick' in English)

Macak (mar-chuk)- tom cat
