Decades ago Penrose seemed to be on a new exciting path, attempting to explain empty space using irrational numbers, but I have difficulty with the 'Platonist' view. Polkinghorne is interesting, but too eager to read his religion into his physics. But he is a good one to read or hear for those who believe religion and science are necessarily opposites or are incompatible. Modern pantheism has grown a little 'weird', they were more admirable in the 1800's. Maybe there would be a good 'marriage' between the atheist and the pantheist (say what?), because they both seek answers outside the usual more anthropocentric view of the universe. Like Weinberg, the vast empty space and unfathomable time, mocks human meaning and reason. Some of this is also sensed in elohistic portions of the Hebrew bible. God is beyond the comprehension of most people; Christians often make him too small & too human, while others make god nothing at all.

Why waste the money when many of the prisoners are on remand awaiting trial [and hence innocent] in some cases for an incredible TWELVE MONTHS. Others have drug problems and should be in Rehab units NOT in prison were drugs are available. Some are sent to prison for daft reasons like not paying the council tax and shop lifting. If these problems were addressed we would not have the highest prison population in Europe.
Reform the system instead of building more prison capacity

We had a prison ship in the 80s. Off the south coast, if memory serves.

I dont think that they put crims on a ship in the middle of the ocean, they moor the ship. They are just like normal prisons, but float on water than built on ground.

I'm sure the reality is that they would be located near the coast and Prison Officers would be ferried their by boat for their shift & taken back to shore afterwards. I would also guess that they would use normal officers from normal prisons in port towns so they would be able to go home after they finish as normal.

If the system was tougher and we didnt take notice of the fluffy pink pc mob we wouldnt need prison ships coz the snot balls wouldnt keep re-offending all the bloody time and we'd have more space in prisons.

My brother in law spent time on a prison ship in Weymouth. He said it was lovely though TV reception could be dodgy at times. I want criminals to be uncomfortable and punished not worried because they couldn't see coronation street clearly. The answer is national service, people reoffend because they are uneducated and have no sense of value or belonging in todays society. Giving young offenders and out of work young people values is what is needed

I say, take away all the amenities that people in jail and prisons get. I know some cops, and they said that their jail is like the freakin' Motel 6. The trusties get to order pizza, have their own TV's, air conditioners, satellites, everything. Take all that crap away, let their teeth rot out, stop giving them free education, ana all that. Or like that one guy said, bring back hangings!

I say let the inmates work. Let the ship be self governed, but make it a federal violation to dock or pull over to another boat or ship, unless it is delivering items for sustainment, such as personal hygiene, food, recreational equipment,...or...
collecting the dead and diseased.
