I am a 29 year old mother of three who works full time overnight in a group home for persons with mental retardation. (As luck would have it, I am allowed to sleep while I am at work.) I recently decided that I wanted to go to college. (This is my first time- The business school a.k.a. diploma mill that I attended after high school does not count!) I just started this semester. I am an education major, and currently I am only taking 2 courses per semester. I am planning on seeing how it goes, and possibly taking on more courses in the fall. I was wondering is any of you out there have been through a similar situation and can give me some advice on how you made it work without depriving your family, studies, or career of the attention needed.

Been there done that:

1. You have to have a supportive spouse or it is really tough.
2. Try to get the kids involved in chores and housework so they do their own as best as they can.
3. Also you can do Online classes at some schools.
4. Two courses a semester is about right with everything else you have.
5. Try to take one or two over the summer that can help you get finished earlier
6. No matter what do not give up - if times get tough cut back to one class a semeester but do not stop.

GOOD LUCK

You should be very proud of yourself--that's wonderful and I wish you much luck--keep the faith. I just completed my Masters in Accounting this past summer. As a single mother, it took a lot, and I often got very frustrated and tired. But, the thing that got me through was my child--once I started, I knew I couldn't quit--not for me and not for him. Take each day as it comes. Obviously some days there will be one thing that gets a little left out, but make up for it the next day. It definitely takes a person with great time management skills. It won't be easy, but believe me it's well worth it!!!! Make a calendar--that's essential--good luck!!
