My daughter has just had her waist length hair cut to just below her jawline, however, just as the hairdresser was finishing off, he took a few inch wide pieces of hair and made about 3 half cuts through the hair from top to bottom.
WHY??

Is your daughters hiar thick? It sounds to me that the hairdresser was thinning out the hair so it sits more flatter on her face (Not as bulky, puffy looking) I am an ex Hairdresser.

As a professional Hair cutting Educator, I suggest, You are not explaining it well enough to answer this question.
Do you like what it did?
Sounds like maybe you sould ask the hairdresser that did it.
Hope that helps

He was thinning it out a bit so it wouldn't be so bulky and just hang there.

My assumption is so that it didn't just lay bluntly and flat. So that it looked stylish and not pixie cutish..light, feathery, and "bumped"
