I have 2 chihuahuas that are over a year, and their three puppies who will be 5 months, on Feb.2. I feed my older dogs Royal Canin Mini Chihuahua 28, that was recommended by my vet, and I feed the puppies, a different type of food, vet recommended. On the Royal Canin Bag, it says not to feed this to puppies under 8 months old. I have them set up in different rooms because I don't want them getting into each others food, but there may be a slight chance, that the pups may have eaten a little of the Royal Canin, and I was wondering, it that is dangerous, or is it ok, if they ate some?

They should be fine. The age on the bag is just there so people won't feed it all of the time to young puppies. The only problem that you may have is a little soft stool from the different food.

First of all, these puppies are chihuahuas. There are multiple types of chihuahuas, and two head types are appledomed and the deerface. The correct head is the appledomed head, though it should not be exaggerated. The puppy that you describe as "half-and-half" is just a matter of having a different head. He could have more dome, but not the correct angle at the stop, and thus more muzzle (longer) or he could have a correct stop just not as much head or a more pointy muzzle. But again, this is just a matter of breed type and nothing else. Secondly, you should get all five of them spayed/netured. If you are not familiar with the standard AND are not showing, than you should not be breeding. Breeding should only be done for the improvement of the breed, and not because you have two chihuahuas and want a litter of puppies. Chihuahuas can be very difficult to whelp and you could have lucked out. Anyone whose been involved in dogs long enough will tell you that there can be many complications, including fatal one's, irregardless of the breed but certain breeds because of size can be more prone.

I am a vet tech and I would not let the pups eat nothing but puppy chow...at least until they are a year old. I don't think that them eatting some of the food will hurt them, but the vet said not to feed them that on a regular basic. I also have two pups at 8 months and they are on puppy chow along with the mother. She is gaining weight and I am going to have to get her off of it, but for now with the others on PC I am not going to change it. Just make sure that when you do switch them do it slowly by adding some of the other food in with the puppy chow and then after 2 weeks take them off the PC for good...if he already like it, it shouldn't upset his stomach and give them diarreah. Trust in the vet advice he is right......no doubt

I'm sure it will be fine, i have two older labs and just got a minpin baby.the minpin is always eating the others food. the reason the puppys have different food is because they need different protiens and vitamins in thier time of growth.on the same hand..if the other dogs eat the puppys food they will be getting too much protiens and fats that they dont need and could become unhealthy for them as they will gain weight and fats they dont need. so just be sure that the puppys get the vitamins they need for healthy growth and they dont fill up on the older dogs food.

I'm not a vet or vet-tech, but the only reason it says not to feed them the other kind is because it's not formulated for puppies, it won't hurt them if they do eat it though. It doesn't contain the right amount of protiens needed by puupies. So if your puppy eats anymore, don't worry, it won;t hurt him.

That will be ok, we have kittens and older cats in my house and its very hard to seperate the foods but its just like they make kitten food and adult food kitten food just has more nutrition in it to help them grow healthy and gain the wait they need if you just fed that to a grown cat all the time they would just get fat so they suggest you dont do that. Thats the same with dog foods. So no need to worry its not going to hurt them.

The dogs will not get sick, but it may not provide essential nutrients for a full healthy growth of the dog if they are fed that food the full time.

But there isn't anything in there that will make them sick or anything...no... just don't feed it as a regular meal.

it will be fine i breed mini schazures and the vet i go to told me to feed my adult dogs puppy food the only differences bewteen puppy food and adult dog food is that puppy food has more vitiams to help them grow and is softer for them to chew and big dog food is a little bit harder i think so i think you should start thinking about feeding your adult dogs puppy food

it's ok, don't worry about it. it won't hurt them. but if you are still concerned. watch them closely today and if their behavior changes or they start vomiting or having diarrhea call you vet and they will tell you what you should do next.
