This morning I woke up at 5:30-ish with some heartburn. I immediately took a zantac 75 and went back to sleep. I woke up maybe an hour later, and the heartburn was back, so I took another zantac... but this time it did absolutely nothing.

A little back-story... starting about two years ago, every now and then I get absolutely EXCRUCIATING heartburn (though I didn't know it was heartburn the first time it happened--I thought I was dying). I don't have an ulcer, and the doctors don't know what it is, but my mom described the same symptoms and said she had a pre-ulcerous lesion, so I figure that's what I have. She told me to take antacids and I'd be fine, and that has worked for me for two years.

Until this morning. This morning, I ended up taking 3 zantacs and 2 of these herbal supplement things my stepmom gave me that worked before, and I was STILL up for 2 hours pleading with god to make it stop.

...Should I go back to the hospital and see if they can figure it out now?

Yes, seek medical attention, sooner rather than later.

You might not know that antacids (as well as many other medications) can have a rebound effect that will in the long term, exacerbate the problem.

1) take a serious look at what you are eating and drinking

2) we live in a time that promotes coffee, but I found that the acid in coffee was tearing my stomach and esophagus apart, to the point that I was experiencing those terrible liquid acid burps that would cause me to choke and lose my breath

3) I saw specialists and they put me on Tagamet, 2 x daily

I stopped drinking coffee completely, and found that in a matter of time the situation got better. 2 yrs later I still take Tagamet and the acid burps are all but gone, but the heartburn is still an issue. I will continue taking Tagamet until the situation no longer exists or the Dr prescribes something better.

have them check your gall bladder. that's exactly what used to happen to me til I got mine removed a couple years ago, it was full of stones and ready to blow-so I was lucky--now that it's out, I don't even need antacids ever, and I was a total junkie.
It's very easy surgery, lathroscopic, if you don't have too much infection. I had to wait 24 hours with antibiotic drip and nothing by mouth, and then they were able to go in the easy way--otherwise you end up with a pretty substantial incision--but it's totally worth it.

My husband suffers from heartburn. He is not a pill taker so prescriptions don't work because he forgets to take them. Gaviscon has been the best OTC for him yet. They don't taste great but....instant relief.

Absolutely...run, do not walk there. And toss the herbal supplement things that stepmom gave you.. They are garbage. You may have serious GI problems, but at a minimum need something stronger than Zantac.

Get medical advice and stop popping the Zantac like smarties, the have side effects and you can overdose on them!
You should not be suffering so much. You may have a hiatus hernia;
