Mark my words. there will NEVER be war between the United States and China. The United States is the world's single largest consumer of Chinese made products. Rivals? Yes. Adversaries? No.

This is just the same thing that happened in the late 50's, the 60's, 70's and the 80's. America and Russia had been competing with each other in space technology. The Russians were the first to send man in space, the U.S, were the first to land on the moon, the Russians were the first to put cosmonauts to stay in space the longest time (about 365 days), etc.. It's more like a technological contest.

U.S. and China competing with each other in space for pure technological reasons is not wrong. However, if space competition is perceived by people in pure military terms rather than the aspects of technological advancement, then such people will always think of such thing as a threat.

China's military has a policy of developing low-tech, highly disruptive techniques to undermine superior Western technology.

Their test of an anti-satellite missile recently is one perfect example. This can be interpreted as a sign of escalation on their part, although the most concerning aspect is how long it took their central government to acknowledge the missile test, as it was obvious their foreign policy personnel were completely oblivious.

As for their manned space exploration, this is not much more than a matter of prestige for them - just as it was for the U.S. and former Soviet Union. This is not a military threat in itself, although technology developed as a result could be used to place weapons in orbit.

Why should it by treaty space is free to all and so is the moon and all stellar bodies. No one can claim them like we used to claim land back in the colonial days. If the Chinese go to the moon I wish them the best of luck. You shouldn't fear other countries growing if they didn't the world would never advance.

Because you really, really want to find a reason to go to war with China.

*UPDATE* I probably am bitter, and cynical, but that has nothing to do with this. Going to war with China would be bad for America. It would be worse for China, but it would still be very bad for America. If China invades Taiwan, then we can talk about war, but war over a space program?

How many American lives is stopping Chinese scientific progress worth?

Would you fight?

Yes, going to the moon is a clear cut indication that Bush will get scared and attack China.
