I am looking for respectful answers. There is no need to call those who have faith "dumb" or "stupid" or whatever other kindgergarten name you want.

I simply want to know, from an outside perspective... Do you think it is actually "wrong" to have faith in something? Or does it show character? Does it make you stronger to believe in something? Or weaker?

Thanks for your answers.

If you did not believe in anything that you could not prove, you would be in a lot of trouble. The reality is that everyone, yes everyone, assumes certain truths about the world.

If the faith you have makes you better or gives you motivation, then it is a positive. If your beliefs hurt you or make you a worse person, then it is a problem.

Numerous unbiased studies have shown that people who have faith, and pray, for instance, have better recovery from illnesses and conditions. This would indicate that having a belief in something bigger than ourselves is healthful. It tends to make me believe that we are in fact designed to have faith.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having faith. We all have faith in different things throughout life. We have faith that our spouses won't cheat, that our kids will behave when they are out with their friends, that our pension plan will be available when we retire.

Blind faith isn't wrong but it is stupid. It makes sense sometimes to have faith based on certain evidence.

Religious faith isn't necessarily a bad thing if it works for you. The problem comes in when people insist that their religion is the TRUTH, and that they know it for a FACT (it can't be proven). Too much blind faith makes people delusional.

Are you talking about a faith in God or faith in general? It really depends on what you want to have faith in. Since you asked this in religion I assume you mean faith in God. Either way, there is absolute nothing "wrong" with having faith.

Its hard to generalize this, but I don't think faith all by itself necessarily makes you stronger or weaker, but I think it can give you a stronger sense of who you are.

It is absolutely not wrong to have faith. It is actually quite difficult to place yourself in someone else's hands(God, Allah, etc) For a person to step back and let God do with you what he will is much harder than not believing in anything. For me believing in God and having faith has made me a much stronger person. I feel like I have been very blessed in my life and I owe it all to God. I have had tragic things happen to me, but I always turn to God in those situations and he reassures me that everything will be okay in the end. Faith is an amazing thing to have. It actually brings me a lot of peace.

First - separate the different meanings of the word "faith". Taken to refer to a religiion that excludes people based on dogma, it is understandable that it would be seen as arrogant and wrong by those people, as required by their own religion. Taken to refer to the concept of expecting that one's endeavor will produce a positive result, it is philosophically necessary or only people doing evil would ever try to accomplish anything.

It is better to choose a religion and have faith that it is the right choice than to choose a religion and demand that others have faith that it is the right choice.

First of all, I don't believe anyone can decide what's right or wrong for you, except you.

Second, a person without faith in SOMETHING, at the very least themselves, is a just a shell of a person. Faith makes our lives richer and more fulfilling.

A measure of faith is given to each person. Romans 12:3 The question is what will they place their faith in? If you choose to place that faith in the Creator of the world, that is fine. If you want to have faith in the "Almighty dollar" you might be disappointed in the end. Faith in evolutionism (or anything else)does not make it true. So you must choose to have faith in something true in itself.

How could it possibly be wrong? The Scripture best describes faith as "Faith is the substance of things NOT heard, the evidence of things NOT seen." If you know it's there in your SPIRIT and that it drives everything you do in body and soul, that's your FAITH revealing the truth about God in every aspect of your life!

It is not wrong to have faith in something. I don't know if it makes you stronger or weaker, except if it limits you in understanding current scientific thought or causes you to act in a non-tolerant fashion or --shudder -- encourages you to kill or persecute non-believers.
