I don't leave it that open. Never have. I will give them a choice of the two things I'm willing to make. If they say "I don't care" then that's my cue to go with what I want.
Yes, I have made "peanut butter and jelly surprise". It goes like this: "Mom, what's for dinner" "Peanut butter and jelly....SURPRISE!"

I use to get that - I got so tired of it because as a mother, making dinner every night - you run out of ideas!
Here is what I did.
With the I don't care reply - get some worms and dirt from the garden - place that in front of them and say well you don't care so eat this!
How about - when they say anything or what ever - say OK I want (The most expensive stuff you can think off) and say since you said anything - you're paying with your allowance.
A couple of those and the kids will soon tell you what they want for dinner!

LOL, Of course I do! I always ask what they want, and never get any ideas back. I'm tired of always deciding what everyone wants, because if I please one, another will hate it. I do tell them they had a choice, but nooooooo, I'm suppose to be a mind reader. I think mother's/wives/girlfriends go though this every where, all the time. I'm going to try something different. I'm going to assign each member a night where they have to cook. Let them come up with a plan. I'm at the point where I don't care if it's Spaghetti O's! I don't expect this to work, at least not for long, but it'll help for a couple of weeks at least. Oh well. :-) Good luck.

I have done that in the past...it never works out. No one ever wants the same things. My step children never had vegetables before...and my 6 year old has a keen taste for sushi. She would eat raw fish every night if I could afford it. What I have discovered is that I give everyone a night to pick there favorite meal. I make enough to pull aside 2 full dinner portions. One night if they do not like what is being served, they can eat left over dinner from there night. The other goes in the freezer and we either have left over night one night...or they can have it for lunch one day. Everyone must give me there dinner for the week on Sunday morning...as I go shopping Sunday night. Everyone knows what is on the menu for the week, so they can choose what night to have their leftovers on. It works so well. For any mom or dad who has kids I recommend trying this, it really does save some headaches.

My daughter is not old enough to give me such an annoying answer, but my partner is.
I just make salad for he and I, and fried rice loaded with veggies or pasta for our daughter. He still hasn't learnt, but I love salad, so I don't mind.
My mother in-law, on the other hand.... has the best reaction to this answer...
When she gets "I don't care, whatever"
She comes back with "Ok, nothing pie and government juice it is!"
What is Nothing pie??? Exactly what it sounds like..... NOTHING!!!
What is governement juice???
Why, water of course!!!
She usually gets a propper answer soon after this statement.

I have been married for 7 years and every time I asked what my family wanted to eat, I got nothing, So I started telling them that whatever I make they would have to eat, and if they didn't want it, then they can make and eat hot dogs or cereal. Now I get a response. Or I would reverse it and say to them, well I guess its hot dogs or maybe cereal and would start getting the bowls out and they would start telling me what they wanted for dinner. It works.

They don't care. They're probably young and don't know what to say.
I make different recipes all the time. If they don't like it, they won't starve. If they complain, it's too bad because they're too young. On the other hand, I try to pick recipes that I think everyone will like.
However, if they were teenagers and complained, I would hand them the frying pan, a cookbook and ask them what's for dinner the next evening.
I bet your meals would taste very good all of the sudden.

Doesn't that drive you crazy? I hate it when I hear "I don't care" and then when I put dinner on the table "Ewwww I don't like that" or "I'm not eating that" or "I'm not hungry". Let's talk about the 30 minute argument about where and what pizza we are going to order or what restaurant we are going to eat at on the rare occasions we attempt to go out to dinner. It makes me crazy on a daily basis...I used to like to cook...and the older my kids get the more I hate it. One of these days I'm going to slap the peanut butter and jelly on the table and say "I'm done!!" How about you?
