Cornish Pasties
Pastry
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup butter, diced
1/2 cup lard or solid vegetable shortening (e.g. Crisco)
5-6 tablespoons cold water
1 pinch salt
Filling
1 lb chuck steaks, diced (ground beef may also be used, but at a loss of texture)
1 russet potato, diced (~6oz.)
1 cup rutabagas, diced (~6oz.)
1 onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon dried mixed herbs, of your choice
1 egg, beaten until just frothy
salt and pepper, to taste
Sift flour and salt into a large bowl.
Using a pastry blender, your fingertips or 2 knives, cut in the butter and lard/vegetable shortening.
Sprinkle the chilled water over the dough, adding more if necessary.
Knead the pastry on a lightly floured surface for a few minutes or until smooth.
Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
If you refrigerate for a fair more than this time, you will probably have to let the pastry dough sit out for a bit after removing it from the fridge to allow it to become pliable again.
Preheat oven to 425F.
Divide pastry into 6 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a circle on a lightly floured surface.
Mix filling ingredients in a bowl and then spoon an equal amount onto each round of pastry.
Be aware that you are going to fold the circles in half, so spoon accordingly.
Brush the edges of the pastry rounds with water and fold in half.
Press edges firmly to seal, then crimp.
Brush pasties with beaten egg.
Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 325F and bake for 1 hour more.
Do not undercook as you must make sure the meat gets throughly cooked.
Serve hot or cold.

If you hate touching the chicken. Do what I do, I buy those medical rubber gloves, you can get them at walmart or target and you don't have to get that oogey feeling when you touch the chicken, but you still have controll over the thing when cutting it up. Why don't you make a more "island" flavor of chicken.. Make some pineapple salsa.. pineapple, a little cilantro and a little onion... Cut up the chicken into peicies and marinate in pepper, cilantro, onion and garlic add a little white or apple cider vinegar you can even add the apples, olive oil.. if you have any kind of dried herbs like a jerk rub or seasoning, add some of that.. marinate until you are ready to cook it tonight. bake off the chicken and serve it with the pineapple salsa.. Serve with rice.. white or brown..

Try wholemeal chapattis. They are tasty and a bit softer than wraps, which can go a bit dry. Some supermarkets do their own make, or sharwoods do them. You could try them with tinned vegetable curry-Asda do a smartprice one which is nice and really cheap. Also try salsa or guacamole in your cheese and onion wraps- they will also give you extra veg toward your 5 a day, or serve them with side salad. the good thing about about wraps is you can put anything you like in them! My favourite is chilli con carne and grated cheese with sour cream-mmm!

You can use just about anything you would've normally put on bread as a sandwich. Meats, cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes, you could even make salad wraps, (spread small amount of dressing on tortilla and fill with your favorite salad items).

Korean barbecue restaurants serve their meats with whole leaves of green leaf lettuce to roll them in. Just lay the leaf flat out on a cutting surface and cut the stem out (in the shape of an inverted V) without cutting all the way to the top so your leaf is still all in one piece. You can then roll up any kind of sandwich filling in them.

I love using wraps and adding seasoned chicken with lettuce and tomatoes, onion.
You could use any meat you have left over unless you are on a meatless diet.
