it's what you feel comfortable in. try many cars until you feel comfortable.

Go for a car that is cheap on gas, reliable and safe. Personally, my first car was a 1992 Nissan Sentra XE that I bought used in 1995. I am STILL driving it and it's running great! Don't worry about how "cool" the car looks, just go for something practical. Nissans and Hondas are both excellent cars to consider for long-term use and safety.
