pointer, but she would chase it and I would shine it on the front door and she was launching herself like 5 and a half feet straight up. It was crazy, she was jumping as high as my chin! She is only about a year old and was the runt of her litter.

I have seen a startled cat make a vertical jump of over 6 feet, straight into the air from a standing start. I have seen a cat being chased make a jump onto the top of a fence that was over 7 feet high-- front feet on the top of the fence, hind feet giving a purchase on the fence to get the rest of the body up. Cats can be incredible jumpers.

Funniest thing I ever saw: we had an old long-haired Persian cross that lived in our neighborhood. This cat was not young, probably in his early teens, and I always thought of him as elderly and not too athletic until one twilight I saw him go after a moth that was feeding on some honeysuckle flowers. This moth was hovering near the flowers, about 4-5 feet above the ground. Well, this decrepit old cat stalked the moth and suddenly made a leap at it! He turned a somersault in mid-air and darned if he didn't catch that moth! He landed on his feet and had an almost dazed expression on his face, like he couldn't believe what he'd done. I had to laugh-- it was such a funny sight.

Cats are incredible leapers. Fun to use a laser pen to get them going.

We had a cat that could jump from the ground onto the flat roof part of the house, about 8 - 10 feet almost straight up. Another cat would jump about 6 feet horizontally across the tops of kitchen cupboards. He had to be carefull because if he jumped to high instead of wide he would hit the ceilling and fall to the ground. He had this down to a fine art eventually.

I have an entertainment center in my living room and the top of it is 6 feet 4 inches off the ground and my 3 year old cat can jump up on top. He doesn't make it clean, he has to grab with his font paws and pull himself up, but he does it easily. He like to sit up there and survey the whole place, keep everyone and everything in his sights.

He was also the runt, but you couldn't tell by looking at him now, he is huge, but not fat. He is a very healthy, stocky cat.

Cats get hairballs from clumps of fur balling up and sticking together instead of passing through the intestine like it normally would. Even short-haired cats can get hairballs. You don't need to worry about it too much if it happens once in a blue moon, but you might want to consider medication if the hairballs are regular or even seasonal (since cats shed more in spring and fall). Most hairball medicines can be bought over-the-counter at almost any pet store, but it's always a good idea to check with you vet first. I'm pretty sure most medications are pills you mix in with your cat's food once a week, making it very easy to treat seasonally. There's also certain types of food, like Science Diet Hairball Formula, that help break down the clumps of fur to make them easier for your cat to pass.

My cat, Zoom, literally ran up the wall...I'm not sure if this qualifies as jumping but it was still an amazing feat.
Our brick kitchen ceiling is about 7 feet high; Zoom ran all the way up to the top brick from the floor. Everyone in the room was completely dumbfounded...it was the most amazing thing I've ever seen.
Haha.

One of my rescued cats one time could jump to the top off my window from the floor without running into the jump, that was 7 feet straight up. Another one (young) would jump from the floor to my fiances shoulder, he stand 6'3". However my OLD cat can hardly make it to the bed sometimes....

On average, 5 feet up is normal without a lot of effort.

My cats do jump, but it was funnier when my guinea pig "popcorned" nearly over my head! They usually bounce around like little popping kernals, but something got into Tonks and she did some crazy twisting leap past my head while I was sitting on the ground with her. I think she startled herself, she just sat there for a minute looking confused!

My kitten is 6 months old, and he can jump up to 8 feet sometimes,,,,,,but when your playing with a laser pointer, be very careful you don't shine it in her eyes because it can blind them.
