The best way to wash produce depends on what is being washed.

Fragile or very ripe fruits such as berries and grapes should be washed using a sink sprayer with warm water. If you don't have a sink sprayer, then use a wire basket to immerse in warm water. Don't let them soak though, otherwise the fruit will absorb the water and lose it's flavor.

Vegetables and fruits that are leafy or go in salads should be washed with water that is as cold as possible so they remain crispy.

Fruits such as peppers and tomatoes should be scrubbed by hand under running water until the make squeaky noises. Veggies with rough skins or peels, like potatoes and carrots can be washed with a wire scrubber.

Also, be sure to wash things that you cut, even if you don't eat the peel/rind...the knife will cause the dirt to get inside the meat of the fruit.

I know you were probably expecting a washing solution or chemical...you can buy some from the store. But all you really need is water. Water and vinegar doesn't help...just makes it taste funny.

I mix half water and half hydrogen peroxide with a squeeze of lemon and pinch of salt in a spray bottle. Spray the fruit, let it set for about 30 seconds, then rinse well. If I am going to be out, and maybe want to buy an apple or something, I wet a paper towel with the solution and put it in a ziplock bag. The other day I was out, got hot and a bit smelly, and used the wipe on the ol pits lol

In the case of waxed and thick skinned fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, potatoes and apples, I use watered down dish detergent and rinse well. For leafy vegetables I use plenty of plain water.
