Unfortunately, there is no inexpensive way to do a root canal. Even if you have insurance, most insurance companies do not cover a root canal 100%, so you have to still pay out of pocket. I would suggest going to another dentist. There are some that do a more flexible payment plan then the one your dentist offered you. I feel your pain; I had my first root canal @ 25. You need to take care of this ASAP because if you don’t you will be worst off, not because of the pain but your tooth will start to rot. Good Luck!

Get dental insurance though it will only cover a percentage of the cost and you will still be liable but at least it won't be the full price. It may take up to 30 days before you can use it though. You may also qualify for Medicaid - not Medicare, unless you're 65 or older. You might want to see another dentist too because it shouldn't cost that much. Also, getting it pulled it cheaper too.

Call 1-800-Dentist, they will find you a dentist to make monthly payments to. In the meantime, rinse your mouth out with a little warm salt water, or diluted Hydrogen peroxide, Don't swallow it! and take some aspirin or Tylenol for swelling and pain. A root canal is the only way to save a tooth when it gets infected under the gum line.

$2000 sounds kinda high. Check another place you could check at the university dental school near you. They are cheaper, but probably no payments. Another possibility is to get it pulled, but it is best to save teeth if you can. When I had a problem like this , the pharmacist said I could take an aspirin type product (aspirin, motrin, naprosyn ) with tylenol at the same time (but not two aspirin products)...check with your doctor or dentist first...but I know that hurts like the devil!!

Try a local community clinic. I know in my area there are several clinics that specifically serve those with government sponsored insurances (medicare, medicaid...). They usually have much cheaper rates.
Also, try a teaching hospital with dental school. You'll have a resident or intern perform procedures under supervision of a doctor, but it will much cheaper.

If you life in NY, you can check out the NYU dental school. (nyu.edu/dental) They have their students perform procedures while being supervised by professionals. Depending on what you need done, it'll be either seriously discounted or free. (The free stuff I think is just basic checkup stuff, though.) Get in touch with them and see if they can help. If you're not in NY, look up whatever local dentistry school is near you.

Go to your local Social Services office and ask about low income dental programs.

You could loose it. Go get another temporary filling until you can afford the crown. You may not have any blood supply left for the tooth or worst food could get into the place the tooth fell out and cause other problems.

"Free Root Canal Alternatives Guide"

Perhaps you'll be able to find HELP starting with this website.

Good luck!

PS: Depending on which tooth it is you might considered having it extracted.
