Take either the A, C or E. It will put you right there.

The exhibit is great.

Take the downtown A or C to Broadway Nassau St (get off! it's the last stop before you wind up in Brooklyn) and walk a block
or A,C or E downtown one stop and walk through Penn Station (NOT a transfer- you have to pay another subway fare) and take the 2 or 3 downtown to Fulton Street (get off or you'll be in Brooklyn).

I'm always amused by Manhattanites who act like they can do anything, but are too terrified to cross a river. So I say be bold.

After the exhibit get back on the train and go to Brooklyn. One stop on the A or the C puts you in Brooklyn Heights, a short walk from the Promenade, where you'll get the single best view of lower Manhattan. If you're in time for lunch, drop by one of the many restaurants on Montague Street and burn off the calories by walking back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge.
