Nowadays, there are several colleges with airway science programs that give you a college degree and at least your commercial license. You need to have a college degree to be an airline pilot, so this way you learn to fly and get your degree in one fell swoop. From there, you need to build up flight time - a favorite way is to be a flight instructor. Most of these colleges have advisors to help you on your way.

If you already have a college degree, you can learn to fly at most local airports that have flight schools (this is how I learned to fly).

Another route is through the military, especially the Air Force, but you are not always guaranteed a pilot slot, so this can be tricky. If going military, you are better off flying a large transport plane rather than a fighter as the transports are more like the airline flight environment and the airlines prefer this type of experience.

Once you have enough experience and the proper pilot licenses, an airline that hires you will train you to fly whatever type plane they use.

Good luck!!

In order to become an airline pilot you do need a college degree - so you have a couple of options. You can attend a regular college and go to flight school on your own and get all of your ratings or you can attend a school like Embry-Riddle that has an aviation program so you can get your degree and your ratings at the same time.

If you have already attended school - I would suggest that you attend something like the Delta Academy as that can take you from your private pilot rating right to your first interview with a commuter airline.

Hope this helps!
