I know a lot of women that are wonderful people but are shut out of the dating scene because they are not a size 5. Would you date someone who you knew to be a wonderful, smart, caring, honest person, but was overweight?? If not why? Would what someone else thought be a factor to keep you from dating someone you liked that happend to be overweight??

Unfortunatly there are lots of people out there that have bought into the whole, "a girl must look like barbie" idea. There are men out there who actually prefer very overweight women but are ashamed to admit it because of the social attitude towards it. I myself don't mind a little extra meat on the bones. I am not attracted to the very overweight, but that is just me. The most important thing is and should always be what the person is like on the inside.

There's a big difference between a size 5, and a size 24. I'm sure most mature men prefer a woman somewhere between a size 8-16.
Being overweight is unhealthy. When a person is obese, their lifestyle is limited. If a person enjoys sports, hiking, tennis, dancing, and biking, can an obese person participate? Obesity also means health problems such as diabetes, bad knees, heart conditions-- also limiting.
You can't blame people for wanting a healthy, fit mate who can enjoy various activities, but I don't believe most men seek a skinny woman.

I don't really see that to be very true. It's just that a lot of overweight people are insecure about their appearances and the low self esteem shows, which is an unattractive quality. I think that self esteem (not inflated) and self respect are much more important qualities than weight. Yes, I have dated a few overweight men. Never worked for me because either they were lazy and unclean (with their bodies and/or homes/cars), and/or they tried to rush into sex or a serious exclusive commitment without us really coming to know each other very well, which translates to me as "low self esteem."

women think it's the most important thing because that's what men portray themselves liking the most. Look at a guy's room or his myspace or something like that and what kind of girls to you see posted everywhere. Really little women in bikinis. I mean you hardly ever see a small/skinny guy with a larger girl on t.v. It's all in the media. I think people should care more about a person's character or personality because usually that's unchanging but someone's looks can vary. Plus people act like someone will be overweight for the rest of their lives. I know a lot of women who met the right guy and decided to lose weight to wear a wedding dress or something like that. so the weight can be lost. I think it has a lot to do with how your friends are too. You will rarely see a guy with an overweight girl because he's afraid his friends won't like her. I think it depends on a guys maturity level. Usually when they "grow up" they look for women they want to marry and be with forever. and they have to realize that she won't physically look 20 or 25 forever and that eventually she will get old. for women I think it's just trying to meet society's view of what we should look like. For me I'd like to be healthy and look good to myself not to anyone else because if you can't like yourself for how you look no one else will.

Not seeing someone because of their weight shows immaturity and is not worth your time. Obviously they have some growing up to do. I have friends from way back when, they were thin and attractive. Having kids has changed that. Now, I am the one looking good. Time doesn't stop for anyone.

People should be more interested in the mind and not so much the body.
