In building construction the most important thing is the foundation. Within the foundation the most important thing is the stone that is first set. It is set in a corner because if it is set properly, and constructed properly then you have two walls that will be "true" (accurate, straight). If the cornerstone is askew, then the walls will not be able to stand for long if at all. And if the walls don't stand, then the building will fall/cave in and it's occupants will perish, and what the building represents ( a government center, a city hall, a home, etc) is thought to be unimportant, and false.
As Jesus was one to speak in parables and allegories, so that the people would have a frame of reference, it stands to reason that He would use this building reference to prove His point. His point being: He is the chief cornerstone (the first stone set in the foundation). The foundation of what? The foundation of the plan God set about to have His children return to Him after learning what they/we need to learn. Christ is saying that He is true, He is the standard against which all else should be measured. He is the first, the best. And to take it a step further, He is the rock, He is strong enough - the only one strong enough, I might add, to be the Chief Cornerstone.
I must add that there is a reference to the cornerstone being the stone that if removed the entire building would fall. This person is confusing their construction terms. The item he is discribing is the keystone. It is found in the arch of the doorway and it the last stone placed. It is always in the center of the arch and is larger than the other stones in the arch. It is called the keystone because it holds the arch together, it holds the other arch stones in place.
I don't mean to disrespect the person who said this, but I needed to correct the mistake in terminology. The cornerstone of a building is located at the base, in the foundation, not in the doorway at the top.

2:20 Apostles and prophets mentioned in this reference should be distinguished from the reference in 4:11. The founding apostles are meant here, as in Rev. 21:14, while the later reference (4:11) is to the ongoing mission of apostles, who serve the church of Christ in a more general way.
Spirit filled life study Bible. 1997, c1991 (electronic ed.) . Thomas Nelson: Nashville
The cornerstone refers "in construction" as the one stone if removed would cause the entire building to fall down. In this instance, the cornerstone is symbolic of Jesus, and the building is our faith. The apostles and prophets are the other stones which make the building or our faith.

Eph. 2:20b "... Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit."
Jesus is the foundation upon which His Church of believers is built. Each believer is a "stone." Together, Jesus and His believers make up God's "dwelling place," or spiritual Temple.

"The stone that the builder refused has become the headstone of the corner."
In layman's language and referring to a life situation, it means that you could have applied for a job but denied the appointment to that position - perhaps a higher position where you worked. Then at some point, you are called for that very post because you are found to be the very person best suited to carry out that particular function.
This actually happened to me.

hello
you know that in construction it is important to have very good foundation.
So Jesus is that very important stone of us the structure (wich lies on it) of his church, that it is not a building made by man but it is a building that he(God) made
