The law has never changed. You have always needed a licence to drive a 7.5 tonne

I think what you mean is since when has it been necessary to take a test to drive 7.5 tonne over and above your standard car licence OK

Of this I have no idea but DVLA.com will be able to satisfy you quest for knowledge

If you have a category B license (i.e. a one to drive a car at 17 years old) you are able to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, with 7 or fewer seats. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, there are a number of categories dependant on the type of vehicle. As far as I am aware, the law has not changed recently (last 5 years) regarding license categories.

Check the DVLA website or collect a license application from a post office. Both sources will be able to help you identify catergories and age restrictions.

My other half who is an HGV driver thinks that the law changed in about 2000, if that's any help!

This website states that to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle you must have Category C1:

Hope this helps.
