The first thing you should do is establish a regular sleeping schedule. I know it's tempting to stay out late on nights when you don't have to hit the hay early, but your body's metabolism is regulated by habitual patterns. Perhaps you've heard of the circadian rhythm? Your body preps for waking according to your normal schedule. If no normality exists, it has to jump start systems to give you power on demand, which wastes energy and requires allocation of system resources from other vital systems.
Poor Richard's Almanac remains true: Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
Staying out late and sleeping in while the sun is up is bad for the body.

a few tips that might help:
1) instead of sleeping for a couple of hours, waking up, and going back to bed, you should try to just go to bed every night arround 10:00 pm and wake up arround 6:00 am (over sleeping can leave you feeling very groggy) try to ensure that you will get a minimun of 7 hours of sleep.
2) try not to eat anything no less then 2 hours before you go to bed, the digestion process can keep you from getting a restful sleep.
3) take a warm bath/shower before bed to relax the muscles.
4) as you lie in bed trying to fall asleep, imagine as you breathe in, that the air is "relaxation", first traveling to your feet then up to the knees as so on until you fall asleep or you reach the top of your head, this is actually very effictive in getting the body to relax.

I have the same problem. My doctor gave me Restirol, but it doesn't work. I am beating it on my own, without drugs by doing this:
Going to bed at the same time every night
Avoiding stimulating activity before bed, i.e. watching tv in bed
Avoiding ALL beverages for at least 3 hours before going to bed, especially alcohol
Waking up at the same time each morning, even on weekends when I don't have to get up for work
With these tips in mind, I have slept through the night the past 4 nights in a row (a record for me). I don't wake up to go to the bathroom. I don't wake up unable to go back to sleep. I wake up and feel as though I were recharged!

Aren't you supposed to wake up everyday refreshed? Guess I'm lucky, I go to bed at different times depending on activities but I always wake up refreshed. Most times I wake up just before my alarm.

To get out of a bad sleeping pattern I use over the counter unisom. Just 1/2 tab at around 9PM. This keeps me asleep all night and I wake feeling great, of course after my coffee.
If I do that for 2-3 nights then I get back into a good sleeping habit.
My sister likes the supplement melatonin, that's natural and really makes you sleepy too.
Best of luck,

take a few minutes to stretch before you even get out of bed... it sends blood through your muscles and makes you feel better. Also try to make time for a shower, having extra time will wake you up quicker than you realize. Also, get in bed at the same time every night (maybe give or take a half hour) and eventually your body will adapt.

Good nutrition and regular exercise are helpful. Avoid caffeine as much as possible (especially late). Try to go to sleep at a similar time every day and get up at a similar time too. Keep the room dark and quiet with a comfortable temp. Try to not watch television right before you go to bed. If your mind is overstimulated it can be hard to relax. God Bless.

you have to start with a regular sleep pattern, ie going to bed at the same time and waking up at a decent hour, no more than 8 hours later. sleeping more can only hurt you. also you shouldnt eat right before going to bed or drink heavily the night before- if you want to wake up refreshed.
you can also try exercising that will help with your 'energy'

If you are waking at 11:30, you are going to bed too early. Try going to bed around 10pm. If you have trouble staying asleep, try taking one Benedryl before going to bed.
