The only animal I have ever hit was a dog that had already been hit, I could not safely avoid him, and he was already long dead.

But I have had my dog hit, and it is very hard but 99% of the time it is the owners fault. My dog had slipped out of an open gate, she was in the road, and she was deaf. It is the owners responsiblity to ensure the animal is leashed or confined safely.

Feel bad yes, and you will probably be sorry, but in the end, there was nothing you could have safely done or you would have done it. The owners have no legal grounds to anything from you, but if you are a kind person, saying you are sorry and showing some grief or at least the curteosy of stopping and helping collect the pooch's remains would be kind.

Unfortunately, yes. It was on a rural highway, and the owners let their 50 pound dog run free into traffic. I pulled over and was freaking out and crying, because I love dogs. The owner was so nonchalant! Saying the dog shouldn't have left the yard, and proceeded to haul him by the collar to the side of the road and just leave him! I offered to pay for a new dog or something, and they just waved it off! I couldn't believe a dog owner didn't care like that! I would have been heart-broken if anything like that happened to my dog.

Once many years ago. I don't think I'll ever forget the sound. The dog must have been a stray. I never found an owner and the dog wasn't in the best shape. Too thin and very matted. I felt horrible.

I haven't personally, but a few years ago on the the night before thanksgiving my boyfriend ran over a litte white dog and it died. He felt so bad. The owners rushed out and said it wasn't his fault (it was 1 a.m. and the dog had ran out of the yard when the owners opened the gate). He still felt horrible.

Accidents happen. Assuming you didn't deliberately run the pooch down into road pizza, then you have not much to worry about.

They might sue you, but they can only sue for the value of the dog - since the law regards dogs as property and nothing more.

No, thank God. If the owner's really loved their dog, they would have had him on a leash and took the dog for a walk. They are the ones who neglected their dog.

Animals I've hit or been hit by....

turkey

racoon

and an 8point buck ran right into my driver door on the highway!

sadly yes, there was a box truck and it was chasing it and ran out in front of my car. i stop but way to soon the dog was still under my car howling and screeching... very terribale noises, then i pulled up a little bit more and the ddog got up and ran befoe i could check to see if it was alright, but i wasnt going very fast only like 35mph... i felt bad but i dont leave my dogs run for that reason.. so it was the owners fault and they still leave the poor thing run to maybe get run over agian

no, thankfully that has never happened to me, but I have come close. as an animal lover, I would be devastated if I did accidently run over someone's pet.

the most you can do is offer a sincere apology, maybe offer to pay for cremation or burial?

hopefully, they'll realize that it was only an accident, & not blame you. maybe the next pet they get, they'll keep in their yard better.

My ex-husband did and I was in the car. I thought the owner was going to kill him, but it was a tiny little thing and just ran in front of the truck. We really didn't see him and there was a leash law... He paid for the final vet bills because he felt so bad,and the woman still tried to sue him.

No I have not, thankfully...and stupid people should keep their pets on A LEASH! Cats included. If their pet is turned into a highway pancake, it is totally their fault for not being able to control them. I never let my pets out without a leash and I never let them escape. They are too valuable to me I love them too much. I am never slack with my pets.
