2 spindles per step/ 3-5 inches apart according to how wide your steps are.

You need to measure the length you will be covering and then divide by the distance between each spindle. So if you are covering a 60" length and you are putting 6" between each spindle it would be 10 spindles.

I would check with your local city though becuase there are guidelines regarding the distance between each spindle. Children and pets can get caught in the middle of the spindles. For this reason, there are regulations on this just as there are on cribs.

Standard construction practice figures two per tread . Spacing is gauged by dividing the length of " run " by the number of spindles. Adjust for visual appeal in some cases. If the railing ends on the bottom tread with a volute ( curved piece ), there should be just one spindle in the center of it. Pretty much you can copy one of similar style out of magazine pictures.

Check the building code. Call the building inspector Should be 4" between baluster's. Usually two per tread.........Not sure I spelled balusters right.
