Black Forest Cake
Ingredients:
1 chocolate cake mix, 2-layer size
2 cups whipping cream or heavy cream
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons Kirsch
1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
1 ounce shaved semisweet chocolate
Preparation:
Prepare chocolate cake following directions on package, making 2 round 9-inch layers.
Cool cake thoroughly.
In a small bowl, beat the cream with the confectioners' sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
Brush tops of the cakes with the Kirsch.
Place one cake layer on a cake plate and spread with about 3/4 cup of the whipped cream.
Top with half of the cherry pie filling, then top that with the second chocolate cake layer. Spread the side of the cake with half of the remaining whipped cream. Spoon remaining pie filling on top of cake, keeping it in the center. Spoon or pipe remaining cream around the cherries. Sprinkle the whipped cream around edge with shaved semisweet chocolate.

If you want to make a black forest cake - here's the easiest way:
make a devil's food cake mix according to the directions using two 8 or 9" round cake pans - let the cakes cool
level the tops of the two layers using a sharp knife
put 1 layer on a cake plate
spread cherry pie filling out from center - do not let filling drip over the edge of the cake
put the second layer on top of the 1st - spread cherry pie filling on that layer also - again, don't go over edge
CAREFULLY frost top and sides of cake with whipped cream
refrigerate until serving - voila - Black Forest Cake

I went to cake making school years ago to learn how to bake and create a perfect black forest cake among other desserts, and the chef taught us all one very important lesson. Commercial black forest cakes tastes very good, choose the bakeries that guarrantee the best ingredients (pure chocolate, real cherries, genuine high quality kirsch and the other liqueurs, freshly whipped fresh whipping cream) and buy it from them.
The cost for you to make it yourself is quadruple their cost. You might even be tempted to scrimp on some of the expensive ingredients. They wont scrimp, they have power of institutional discount buying, and dont forget about economies of scale.
They make 200 you make one.
Moral of my story?- If you want Black Forest cake, buy it from the best reliable deli bakeries.
