The People's Republic of China WAS smarter than the "superior intellectual" Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It is THRIVING! All capitalist countries made them into an economic superpower almost in par with the United Sates of America. As a former "covert intelligent person" I saw that as early as 1979 when they went into VietNam to ensure control over fellow communists nations south of them. They WILL defend North Korean, but especially Iran and Venezuela from George Walker Bush and alike without hesistation! Since they are growing "economically" and not spreading their potential military basis. The next potential will space, the moon, and beyond.

Yahoo sold out and betrayed dissidents in China and now they ARE doing it in the United States of America!

They are creating "Technical Glitches" and sending "violations" and intimidations!

You have to think of it on both sides. First, Will China one day be a threat to the west?. Second, Will the west one day be a threat to China?. By carefully balancing actions to answer these two questions will remove the feeling of threat to both sides. However, if any action of either one is considered a threat by the other, this will definitely cause a clash or conflict of interests.

Economically? "Yes". Militarially probably not. They depend on us for too much money through trade and vice-versa. The face of China is changing with every city that adopts the Hong Kong way of doing business. The Maoist are learning that capitalism is not all that bad and will morph into a Capital-Socialism over time like many European countries. Time will tell.
