I'm assuming that you are talking more about the "micro stock" agencies such as istock. Yes, some people make a nice amount of money. Those people also have extensive portfolios and put a lot of work into creating stock images. The percentage of people that make a full-time income through the microstock route are very few. A larger percentage make a part-time income but even those have large portfolios of images. I've done it a few months with both istock and fotolia, so far I've earned enough for a good cup of coffee. I don't blame the microstocks for my lack on income, that has more to do with my rather small portfolio. The real benefit to me has been the challenge to improve my photography skills.

Hi there, I would like to inform you that you can earn significant income from a well-established stock photo company. The primary stock photo companies that are established include big names like gettyimages, creatas and corbis. Before earning that income, you would need to show them your extensive portfolio and build a strong rapport with them.

Remember, they are not interested in how well you shoot. All photographers doing this are expected to be skillful. More importantly is your composition, depth, tonal range. Therefore, only show them you portfolios with these strong keypoints.

I shall not disclose the earnings due to confidentiality. But let's just say that you can earn up to 5-6 digits for professional, high quality photos(including digital imaging) in one project. But do keep in mind that you still need to pay your photography assistant, producer, stylist, makeup artists, models/talents etc....

There may be other stock image libraries online but do check with them on how they go about paying you before you decide to commit to them.

It is possible to make some money from selling stock. To do so, you have to have an extensive portfolio of great images, or unique images. We are talking thousands or tens of thousands images.

Not many people make a living at selling stock.
