I think some of it is due to social changes.Gone are the average 9 - 5 job,we work longer hours and sometimes have to eat on the run. When we get home we are tired and choose convenience over health. There are many times when ive had to rush out the door at 5am with a banana or packet of crisps, then eating nothing again until 9pm when i get home and grab the nearest thing.

Long ago people use to work much harder than we do today, plus the amount of processed sugar and fat in food has increased because it is cheap and we are always looking for something quick and easy to eat. Our lifestyle has change a lot, more sitting and less physical activity ( think exercise). But the food we eat had really changed. Less raw food, more fast food. And we are paying the price in dollars and in quality of life.

Time has happened. People seem to not have anytime to eat, especially the every important family dinner. Besides which most doctors will tell you it's now healthier and better to eat 5-6 small meals instead of cramming 3 big ones.

Because people rarely have to WORK anymore. Everyone has jobs... but who WORKS. I know I dont' get any exercise at work. Childhood obesity is on the rise too. Why? Cuz our kids dont' go outside to play. They sit inside and chat online (ironic, since I'm online writing this, lol) and play video games and watch movies and listen to their I-Pods.
Back in the day, mom made a HUGE breakfast, everyone was up at the crack of dawn, they ate, they went and worked on the farm, then they went to school (while the adults continued to work on the farm or at a manual labor job), then they came home, had a big supper and went out and did the chores. Today the majority of our calories are consumed just a few hours before we go to bed. We nibble on a bagel or send our kids off with a "milk and cereal" bar in the morning, run on fumes all day, then gorge ourselves on dinner and dessert at night...right before sitting down and relaxing for the next 12 hours.

Genetics play a big part to some extent, but nowadays, the food we eat is generally not quite healthy for human consumption. As a result, we ingest chemically treated 'foods' which bloat us up though we eat right amounts at the right times.

kittikat is so right. Lack of exercise and hard manual labor. We use out brains and our rears to sit on and that is our work. I find two meals and a snack plenty for me--to maintain the desired weight--and still sometimes that is too much. lol
