TPM = Total Productive Maintenance
- Defined as preventive maintenance plus continuing efforts to adapt, modify, and refine equipment to increase flexibility, reduce material handling, and promote continuous flows. It is operator-oriented maintenance with the involvement of all qualified employees in all maintenance activities.
- Also defined as the maximisation of equipment effectiveness by minimising unplanned stoppages. Maintenance is carried out to a pre-planned schedule, rather than waiting for the equipment to break down.

Six Sigma refers to a "quality" program used by equipment manufacturers to try and ensure their products carry no defects. It is a series of statistical methods to identify and correct failure modes (when they appear), and to prevent possible failures from occurring by being proactive rather than reactive.

Some manufacturers have taken the six sigma process a stepo further, by operating a lean working environment due to the fact that there are fewer personnel required to 'check' equipment and processes, since there's virtually no product faults to start with.

Ideally, TPM would require a thorough understanding of both the equipment and process, as well as the capabilities of the employees, to be successful. The planner would use statistical tracking of past performance as well as statistical probabilities for predciting future performance.
