Because it is a reflection of them....when other kids see your home it reflects your lifestyle, a dirty or messy home leads others to believe that is acceptable to you...if your parent is an alcoholic naturally you are embarassed - your friends make fun of your drunk parent...or if your mom is in her 50s and she dresses like she is 20 it is an embarassement that she is not acting her age....Kids want to be accepted, peer pressure is very hard on kids, you don't want your family to own a beat up old hoopty when the other kids family owns a new SUV...

I think it has to do with society and the other kids once they get out into the world. They are the ones who make kids think that their parents aren't what they should be. Hopefully, kids realize that their parents are pretty great even if they don't always look or act like the "ideal."
I get the sense, and of course I could be wrong, that kids tease you about your parents because they might not speak much English and so forth. I can understand being embarrassed because kids give you grief over them, but you know how great your parents are, too. Those kids will never know that and real friends wouldn't think of making you feel ashamed of your parents. Good luck!

Personally, I think it's a natural instinct to start separating the child from the parent and setting it on its course to being an autonomous individual. It's not healthy for a child to continue to be dependent on its parent after a certain stage, and I think that's nature's way of transitioning the kid to accept greater independence (though it's not necessarily easy for the parent).

Because they are trying to establish their own identity, separate from their parents. When they are forced to do something with their parents in front of their peers, they feel that they might be ridiculed for being a momma's boy or something of the sort. Also, it is very important for a child's parents to be as good or better than someone elses parents, and when their own parents do something out of the ordinary, say something wrong on and on, it opens them up for other children to ridicule them for their parents being stupid, clumsy, poor, fat, ugly whatever. It is just safest for their fragile developing egos for the parents to be as far from their friends as possible.
