NEVER EVER EVER thin the roots.
Anyone thinning hair or texturizing hair should know to never go in more than half-way down the hairshaft, otherwize you'll look like you've got sprouts popping out of your head....

I choose to thin hair about 3 inches away from scalp if hair is long . I never would thin hair close to the scalp because it would stick up . You need some weight from the existing hair to hold the thinned pieces down .

I believe they say close to the end, but to be honest with you, I think thinning scissors cause your hair to be frizzy and brittle. My hair dresser will not use them or razors. Also w/ thinning scissors, when the hair grows back, it sticks out.

depends on the thickness of hair and style that it will be worn in usually; and how curly/wavy it is when the weight is taken out.
never the outside layers - only on the inside.
and never too close to the scalp.

if you cut to near the root you will get tufts of hair spiking up. cut at the mid-lengths and ends.

definitely from the ends you think if you do it from the roots and the regrowth comes back it will just spike up please be careful
