The spirit is always set forth in Scripture as the nobler of the two elements. It is the part of man which gives him commonality with God. Every person has a spirit, or more accurately, every person is a spirit, but is spiritually dead through sin; that is, separated from God, who is the uncreated Life. The spirit of man is made alive through spiritual rebirth when the message of reconciliation is received by faith, and broken fellowship is restored through the preaching of the Gospel. This results in a recreated spirit that has the capacity to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God. The soul is the intermediate part of a man which interacts with his spirit and with the physical world. It is the seat of the will, the intellect and the emotions, including the appetites. When Paul speaks of the nature of a person in its entirety, he refers to the spirit and soul and body (I Thessalonians 5:23)
The only instrument refined enough to distinguish between the workings of the spirit and the workings of the soul is the word of God (see Hebrews 4:12,13)
When they are contrasted, the spirit is always set forth as the higher, nobler element. (see I Corinthians 2:14, 15:44,46; James 3:15, and Jude 19, where the adjectival form for the word soul, psuchikos, is set forth in a negative light, being translated in most versions by the word "natural" or "sensual")
Upon death the spirit either ascends into the presence of the Lord or descends into the lower parts of the earth. This is quite literal according to Scripture! As for the soul, if the spirit has not been transformed by rebirth, the soul and the spirit are inseparably linked together and descend into Hades. If the spirit has been born again, the spirit ascends and the soul undergoes a purging, as by fire. To the degree the soul has been brought into conformity and harmony with the spirit, it is retained and brought into heaven with the spirit. To the degree the soul is in conformity to its lower, fleshly, elements; it is purged away and suffers loss, though that individual is himself saved. (I Corinthians 3:10-14)

A soul is what we are. A spirit is something we have. The breath of life, the body, and spirit together make a soul.
People's spirit is still the same spirit when the holy spirit inhabits them. Its the addition of the holy spirit...not the replacement with.
The spirit comes from God.
We know where the rich man and Lazurus both went when they died. Places that seem to be pre-heaven and pre-hell. They are not the real places that will exist at the end of time. But, they seem to be the same experiance.
The pre-heaven was called Abraham's bosom. Jesus told the thief on the cross that on that very day he would be with Jesus in paradise. We know that the rich man was in a type of hell.

The spirit is a subset of the soul, which is the combined entity of body and spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a separate entity that communicates truth to our spirit.
Yes, non-believers have a spirit.
Our spirits were created by God and sent here to receive a body.
Our spirit goes to a place called the "spirit world" where it will await the ressurrection, a time when the spirit and our perfected body will be reunited for eternity.

Man was created out of the dust from the ground and did not become a living soul till the breath of God was breathed into his body Gen.2:7
The Apostles did not receive the Holy Ghost until after Jesus had reserected. He breathed on them and said: "Receive ye the Holy Ghost." John 20:22c
Every man has a soul, the good and the bad.Everything God has created is eternal, you can burn it and still have the ashes. It's the same with the soul.Peter speaks of those who do not beleive and and referers to them as "unstable souls" 2 Peter 2:10-22
The Holy Spirit is sent from God, John 14:26 ; 15:26
" And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Rev.20:15
" His lord said unto him,Well done, thou good and faithful servant:thou hast been faithful over a few things,I will make thee ruler over many things:enter into the joy of thy lord." Matthew 25:21
As to your question whether the Holy Spirit is different or better, I do not beleive that one is more saved when they receive it.I do believe it gives a Christian additional powers when they receive it and that the will speak in tounges when they do.Acts 1:5 ; 2:1-4 ; 10:44-47 ; 19:1-6
There is not near enough teachings on this subject today.I beleive it to be the number one cause of so many weak Christians today.Jesus when talking with His Apostles said: "..ye shall recieve power , after the Holy Ghost is come upon you ..." Acts 1:8a.

These become tricky questions, as you probably know.
The scriptures use the word [pneuma] when talking about the spirit. As you probably know that word means breath. We are told that God breathes life into us. We are also told that God knew us before we were placed in the womb.
I believe what God placed in the womb was our spirit.
The scriptures use the word [psuche] when talking about the soul. As you probably know that word is most commonly used for the seat of our emotions. It is the inner self. However there are those who also say it means breath, and that it continues on after death.
So there becomes a dilemma as to whether the spirit and soul are synonymous. I guess we will find out some day.
I can tell you one thing, I cannot envision the seat of my emotions existing in heaven.
Will we have the same thoughts and reactions to things if we have the same seat of our emotions? Will people be able to push our buttons in heaven like they can on earth?
I hope that the soul dies with the body, as many ministers think, and the spirit is what goes to heaven, or wherever.
Oh, and doesn't the Bible talk about His spirit says to our spirit, and doesn't it say that our spirit intercedes for us when we do not know what to pray for?

The Holy Spirit is God. You were created in God's image. Therefore you have body, mind, and spirit. I am not verse enough in the difference between the soul and spirit. If I were to guess, I would say they make up the total person. (body/mind/spirit), which was created in the image of God, both male and female.

souls is just the beginning of life, of movement, so all of the being that are alive have one, even animals and plants. in the case of humans, we have a spiritual soul, that bind us together with our creator
the spirit can be better when receiving the holly spirit, but not different
everybody has a spirit, even non-believers
it comes form God
it goes back to him when we die, to heaven

we all have these three body soul and spirit, the spirit is the energy from God that gave us life, the soul is that part of you where the thoughts, the feelings, the memories and our wishes are.
so the spirit goes back to God like when you turn off a light bulb the electricity goes back to its origin, and the soul never dies, once our body dies the soul will go directly to God s presence for a judgement to see how we behaved in this life and if you were good you ll go to heaven and if not you ll go to hell, but notice that if you don t beleive that Jesus died for your sins it does nt matter if you were a good person you need to beleive in Jesus to earn eternal life in heaven.

1. Souls do not exist.
2. Spirits do not exist.
3. When we die we go no where. That's it. Game over.
Deal with it and quit believing in fairy tales.
