Golf outings generally raise a lot of money.

Since you are raising money for the community, you could try working with the Chamber of Commerce to have a festival of some kind where businesses have to pay to have booths. It will bring all of the community out.

Bingo, poker tournaments, etc. are great ideas as well, but check before holding them because often their are gambling rules in your state.

Go to this site: www.benevon.com. They suggest a very simple idea: first, have people go through tours of the place, maybe just the empty land if that's all you have, and explain to them what you want to do. Do that for weeks or even months. Then, hold a one-hour breakfast, and ask people to make multi-year pledges. Simple, low-cost, you're not selling some company's product, you're not giving all the money to the caterers. Very effective.
