Maybe partly, but I think that it is mostly because they don't want to get to know someone who you aren't. Usually, it's three different reasons why woman are perceiving a man as 'not being themselves':

1) They are really nervous, and the woman is trying to say (I liked you enough to go on a date with you, so relax)

2) The man is coming up with really annoying compliments and a fake, wanna-be ladies'man attitude, and the woman is hoping that it's just an act to impress her and that it will go away soon (and permanently)

3) The woman is saying, 'i want to know about you', what you're actually like'. Sometimes, a woman will also, think the guy is trying really hard to impress her and doesn't think that 'just him' is good enough, and she's saying not to worry. This DOESN"T mean, romantic gestures should be totally out of the picture. It means relax, it's ok to say something stupid, maybe be a bit spontanious.

hmmm. well I'm a girl and I would tell a guy that if it seemed to me like he was putting on a show to me. Some of my friends say just be "real" and it means the same thing. Girls don't won't guys to be fake just like guys don't won't girl's to be fake. Anyone can get nervous when first meeting someone and they may act different than they normally would to get that person's attention. But usually the person can see through it. I think it's just a way of telling a guy that you would like to see the "real" him not the person he's pretending to be for you to like him. She may be put off by him acting out of character and usually you can sense it because they don't seem so comfortable with who they're trying to be. I think it should help a guy relax and not try so hard.
