I have a Shitzue and I have found that just keeping her bathed and groomed with a trimming of the hair does wonders. If she gets dirty I bathe her. combing hair for them is like combing mine, has to be done each day. Best way of all is get a short hair cut all over and then brush it daily if you want it to grow out some just keep brushing. I knwo it is a lot of work. If you know any one who is looking for a shitzue, I have 1 for sale. She is chocholate and white, with short hair, nice and clean. She is an imperial shitzue with papers and pedigree. 500.00 takes her. She is potty trained and is 6 months old. She has a great temperment with other pets and kids.

I have had this experience with my shih-tzu, I find that using a detangling spray for babies works perfectly on their hair as well. The product coats the hair to help work out tangles and also keeps it from tangling.

A lot of brushing and a detangler product will work for your Tzu. Keep it short if you don't want to brush it often. You probably should have checked the breed out more thoroughly if you don't know about the fur matting so easily.
As for nightowl or Tanya..why would you want to get rid of a papered, well trained dog for so little?? I have a bridge that goes to NY that I can sell you for cheap!!!

I have 2 Lhasa Apso's and they are similar to Shih-tzu's. I use a creme rinse conditioner on them by "Cardinal". It uses 1 part conditioner to 7 parts water. It really works great. I also try to comb my dogs once every two weeks or sooner. I get them shaved in the summer so its much easier to care for them and they like it too. You can buy this conditioner at most pet stores. It will last a very long time. My Vet recommended it for it also keeps their coats shiny and nourishes their skin to prevent dandruff or flaking.

Shih-tzu's need daily brushing, especially around their face (with a soft brush) and their feet. There are many specialized dog shampoos that may help for long hair, too.
Or... Visit the groomer for hair cuts to keep their hair short.

get it a shave cut every 6-8 weeks. Really you should have checked with a reputable breeder BEFORE you got the dog. You should really research a breed before you bring one home, Llaso's are known for their hair tangle & matting, or, you could brush them every single day!

After each bath, towel dry his/her coat and then apply a mild detangler (dogs or humans will work), sprays are the best.
Then comb carefully and blow dry the hair. Everytime you need to get rid of those annoying knots that form, spray some more and comb, repeat as necessary and good luck!
