After you have received all of your tax pertinent documents. The IRS already opened for business.
If you have more complicated taxes, I wouldn't file until Congress is done defining Tax Law for 2006. Also, many States Legislators are still ironing some things out. Feb 15 or so is about right.

Normally it is April 15, but this year the deadline is April 17 because the 15th is a Sunday and the 16th is Emancipation Day, recognized by the government.

The IRS didn't start acknowledging taxes till January 14 th.

As soon as u have all your documents. W-2 form from all employers, interest statement from banks, gains and lose statement from brokers,interest statement from leaders etc. The IRS starts to process returns after Jan 1,

Well, it will be up to you to gather all the information you need in order to get your return filed. So, when you've done that, you are ready. Employers have until end of January to hand out W2 forms.
