I have a one year old German Sheppard, and a 2 year old female cat. I never got either of them fixed because it just seemed cruel. Now, the dog is always humping furniture and people, and the cat is always going into heat and making all sorts of racket. For the last few months I've let the dog and the cat "mate". It seems odd, but the cat stops whining and the dog seems to enjoy it so I saw no harm. I started finding blood in the litter box, and noticing the cat behaving oddly. Will allowing them to do this cause any long term problems for the cat or the dog?

The only problem that could arise is the 'size' of the dog being too large for the cat.
Also, dogs have knots in their penises, and when they mate, they usually end up pushing so far in the 'tie the knot'. If this is hurting the cat, then it should probably stop now, and not later. However, if both your pets have not been fixed, it's highly possible that the blood you're seeing is from menstruation. The best thing to do, if you can, would be to supervise at least once, or check the cat herself, for any hurts or bruises.
Obviously you won't be able to see much but if you can see any immediate signs of damage, you can stop it.

I assume your cat is female, so the blood is probably just her period. It's not odd for your animals to act interested in each other because the urge to mate for them is a biological thing for them, and it can really be quite an uncomfortable thing for them. There are many health benefits to spaying and nutering animals you should look into.
