Shiba Inu's are a very special breed from Japan. Many of my friends in Japan have these dogs. They are medium sized dogs that have a great noble personality. They were originally from Japan, breed for small bird hunting. They are good with children however not so good with small animals in the house - hunting dogs usually aren't. :) Since they have short hair, they are easy to groom and take little time to brush. Be careful for hunting season though, they actually resemble a fox. I'm sure that your sister-n-law will be very happy with her choice. They are wonderful Japanese dogs!
Attached is a link that has more information about the breed and specific care information.

This dog is like a miniature Akita and can look like a fox. It is very independent and should be trained to walk on a leash properly at a very early age. They are relatively easy to housebreak and will be very friendly with their owners and other pack members in the family, but they may be reserved with strangers, so you should socialize them at a very early age with both other dogs and people. You must show them you are the 'alpha' of your pack so no free-feeding, no sleeping in bed with you and 20 minute time-outs for misbehavior. You MUST be in command of this breed, not the other way around. If you can do that, they will be a wonderful pet.

I have a shiba Inu. they are very cat like dogs. Easily trained and good with all people if they are socailized at a young age. They shed about 3 times a year(blow their coat). some do not get a long with other animals becauce they are a decendent of the akita. Mine does very well with other animals except pocket pets. They are a fun breed and unusual. Oh and you proboly already know that they dont bark, they howl lol good luck

These are interesting little dogs. They look a bit like little foxes. They are described as being very independent and quite "cat like" in nature. They *can be* difficult to train because they are so independent so training as soon as possible is a must with this dog.
They need definite direction as far as no free feeding (food left out all the time), no sleeping in the owners bed, no pushiness allowed. The dog must sit at all doorways before exiting/entering, sit on command before food is given, before play is initiated, etc.
They can be quite reserved with strangers so it is imparative that they are socialized to as many different people as possible--big, small, young, old, all cultures and races, kids and adults!
Good luck!

Very smart, highly energetic dog. Probably needs a lot of exercise and good training! Definitely check out web sites referring to this dog and/or get a book from the library or book store.

Shibi'Inu....Isn't that japanese for "Silly American, you bought an Opossum"?
Just kidding, those are fantastic dogs and with consistancy and training you will find they are an active breed that have some rather amazing traits.

I work at a dog daycare and my experience with them so far has been this- theyre exteremly energetic, can be distructive if they get bored, good escape artists, and they're very clown like. It's hard to explain, but their personalities are just so funny. I don't know about obedience, but the ones I've worked with don't seem to care to listen to me.

It is a beautiful breed of dog. They look intimidating, but they aren't huge. They are neat and clean. I have attached a link to their profile.
