Your income gets stacked on top of his. So, your first say $1000 in income is being taxed at a higher rate than his first $1000.
Still, that wouldn't have caused $3300 in owed taxes.
EDIT:
Your husband must have mistakenly claimed an extra exemption for you on his W-4. He didn't have enough taxes taken out of his check because he thought you could be a dependent too.

IT Pro is wrong. You can never be a dependent if of your husband. You are joint. You did not lose a $3300 deduction just because you worked a little. He is right that your money is added with his and the small amount you made will be taxed higher because you both combined are in a higher bracket. But your only talking about approx $300 in additional taxes because you worked even at the higher tax bracket. Have someone else look over your taxes. Something is missing somewhere.

There is something drastically wrong with the totals you describe. First of all, you are not a dependent; only your daughter is, if she meets certain conditions. Secondly, you should file Married Filing Jointly, this is almost always better. With a combined total of $56,000 in earned income, an three exemptions, unless you have a great deal of unearned income, something is not right. Your taxes can't go up by $3300 based on a $4,000 increase on income. Whom-ever did you taxes must have keyed in some wrong information.

Did you husband had exemptions on his paychecks? If he did, he didn't pay enough tax and that's why you owe. with 3 dependents, it should reduce your tax quite a bit. Make sure he claimed you as a dependent because you made less than 3000
I made 55k gross and 6600 were taken out and I don't expect a refund. I don't have any dependents.
you can also do you tax online without actually filing it and see if the number matched. try taxengine.com, you don't have to pay them if you don't actually file

When he filed his W-4 in the beginning of the year he most likely put to many exemptions down. When he fills it out for this year advise him to put 0 so he has more taken out throughout the years so he won't owe. You said he had a lot taken out in taxes but what did he have taken out in federal taxes???

Something doesn't add up.
It is impossible to have your taxes go up by $3300 by only making $1400. It can't happen!
You need to get a second opinion on your taxes! Find someone to redo them and maybe they can explain it better.

can't happen. You have the same deductions since you are married. Get someone else to do you taxes and get your money back from the first guy.
