Yum! It's cold here too. Michigan winter at last! I love it.

You could do sourkraut and polish sausages/kielbasa. Really is no recipe for that. Just take a few packs of keilbasa, cut it in 4 inch hunks, toss it in the crock pot and cook it on low for 4 or 5 hours. Add a few packs of drained sourkraut and let it cook an additional 2 hours on low. Or corned beef with cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Buy a big corned beef, place a few cups of plain water in the crock pot, add the corned beef and cook it on low for a minimum of 8 hours, or on high for 6 hours. Then add the chopped veggies and cook another 2 hours. Or a chuck steak....(this is my absolute favorite and is great for anyone who loves that old fashioned meaty tasting roast) a big chuck roast is like $12 and feeds at least 6 hungry people. I never even brown mine. I toss into the crock pot a can of beef broth, half a cup of red wine (cheap wine is fine!) and the big chuck roast. Put it on high for like 6 hours or low for 8-10 hours. At the last hour, add some cut up or baby potatoes, carrots and onion.

You could serve all of those dishes with thick slices of hard crusted white or Italian bread with soft butter for spreading on top!

Then instead of a traditional dessert, serve mugs of hot cocoa and 2 or 3 kinds of homebaked cookies that you prepared that morning. Peanut butter, chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin.

How about a split pea soup? Toss into the crockpot a bag of dried split peas, a ham hock or two, a chopped red onion, chopped celery, minced garlic, maybe some chopped carrot, and a diced potato. Add a few bay leaves and a good sprinkle of dried marjoram. Cover with about 6-7 cups of water and cook on high. Stir as much as you can to make it pea-soupy. The ham hocks take care of the rest of the flavor, like salt.

I'd serve it with a crusty bread and balsamic dipping sauce, and a tossed green salad with feta.
