If you don't mind sharing a bathroom, try The Gershwin Hotel on East 27th Street off Fifth Avenue. There are rooms for $50 or less. There are pictures of the room on their website, as well as their phone number, email and fax number. The neighborhood is excellent and the New York Times says the place is spotless.

There are a number of chain hotels in Manhattan (Comfort Inns, Red Roof Inns, Fairfield Inns, etc.) in the $100 - $125 range. You can do quite a bit better by staying either in Queens or New Jersey.

Go to hotwire.com, name the price you want to pay, the area and the star rating. I got great 4 star hotels for LA and New Orleans for $100.
