If you watch kittens while they are nursing from their mothers, you will see that they knead all the time. This assists the milk flow from thier mothers milk glands. It then becomes a comfort measure to them, like thumb sucking. Reminds them of a time when they were happy with their mothers.

I have also heard that it like when they were kittens and drinking milk from their mother. I was told by someone that because kittens are taken away from their moms at a young age they do the kneading thing to bring them back to that feeling of comfort and security.

They do this for comfort. Its like when they were suckling from their mum, they knead to get the milk flowing so they could eat/drink. Also they knead to try and get a comfy spot to sleep, but cats are fickle creatures, and change their mind quite often! lol

My 3.5 mth old siamese kitten does this. And when he does this he either sucks on the blanket or drools. My sis's siamese cats are 5 or so and they still do this, she thought they were sucking the blanket but found out they are drooling like a dog. my kitten has to be against me when he does this so he only does my blanket thats on my bed that way. no other blanket will do.

My cat had never done this. I'd seen my friend's cat do it, but my Billie had never done it. But then he came up on my bed one night and he was purring up a storm. Now, whenever he kneads things, he purrs. So you can tell that they knead stuff to show how happy they are.

Its a sign that there comphy or satisfied. They do this as kittens when they nurse you'll commonly see an audult cat nurse and as she or he does so they will need the object they are nursing on. this could be because they belive doing this will probuce milk. My 5 year old famale cat trys to nurse on our ears... she is just odd... i ahve also found it is more common for felmale cats.

its a form of comforst. When they are babies, they do it instinctively on their momma cat. When they are older its just a habit, but it helps soothe them...and if you think about it, it makes their blanket more comfortable if their smoothing it out!
