I have a Shih Tzu, are they very easy to train, as far as house breaking goes?

Having had three shih tzus, I can honestly say "NO!!" they are not easy to housebreak. They can remember where a piece of beef fell off the counter six years ago, they just can't remember where they're supposed to pee! You're the one who's going to wind up housebroken. I take mine out every three hours. Even if I have to wake them out of a sound sleep to do it! Once they are adults, they can go all night if you run out the door with them first thing in the morning.
I have a chihuahua who would explode before she peed in the house. Sadly shih tzus have no such standards. I have heard this from almost every shih tzu owner I've spoken with.
The good news is that they are so sweet and loving, you kinda overlook the bad habits!

I believe that its not the breed of dog but the method that you use. I have a boxer and I trained her using the crate method. When she would wake up I would instantly take her outside and than after she went pee and/or poop I would bring her in for about a half hour play time and than back into her crate and she would never mess in her crate. Once again when she woke up I would repeat this. After a few weeks of this she was so use to never going in the house that she was trained and has never had any accidents. Make sure to praise her when she goes outside also!! Good luck.

I have 2 ShihTzu's...one is perfect...one I am having problems with. They both are 3 years, although not from the same litter. I hear some are easy to train, others are more difficult. Obviously, I have one of each!! It is frustrating, and a long process, but all the love they give and happiness they bring me, it is well worth the extra work and patience. Wouldn't part with either one for the world.

mine is so smart! she shuts drawers, does a ballerina dance, but housetraining her was a bit rough. she is now 4 and has been really good for the past year, but up until that point she did have a lot of accidents in the house--even while we were home.

do you live in a house, or an apartment? mine really did great when we moved into our house and she could go out whenever she wanted. obviously if you rent you're not going to buy a house for the sole purpose of potty training, but just letting you know my situation.

not in my experience. I have a year old male shih-tzu and we cannot get him trained for the life of us. We have tried all we know, including discipline and praise. Nothing has worked. It seems to have become worse now that he no longer squats to urinate, but now lifts his leg. The messes are horrible and the smell is awful. Needless to say, we are now selling him.
