using a high dosage of chemo on her,but it seems to be doing more harm than good. why are they using such high doses, she has sores in her mouth and arms if this normal and if it can not be seen by the naked eye why such high doses. i feel so bad for her she is only 45 years old. i could really use your help here ? the doctors seem to have no answers for her ?

the cancer is in her lung,she tells me that you can't see it with the naked eye i think she telling me that so i don'tworry but,i am still gonna worry no matter what what she tells me.

The bottom line is this . . if she has a rare cancer and it is a stage IV her best chance to live is high dose chemotherapy. Yes, it is poison and hopefully it will do its job, otherwise your friend could die from her disease. There are 'alternatives' but there is no scientific evidence that they will be effective against her type of sarcoma.

My son was diagnosed with an extremely rare stage IV abdominal sarcoma. And, no, you could not see his tumors either . . but he had them in the abdomen, chest wall, diaphragm, spleen, large and small intestine, and lympathic system. He had to endure 8 months of high dose chemotherapy cycled every 21 days, two surgeries, a hyerthermic chemoperfusion, 8 more months of lower dose chemo, and is preparing for high dose chemo/stem cell transplant. He is younger than your friend, and it seems that younger people can withstand the higher dosage just a little better than older folks. It has not been easy for my son, but he is alive, he has excellent quality of life, his tumors literally disappeared from the chemotherapy (and what was left was removed by surgery) and he is doing better than expected.

My son has never had any of the mouth sores, but he was prescribed a mouth wash to keep the bacteria down. He also amazingly has never had a cold since diagnosed with cancer and his natural immune system has been remarkable. He has had two central line infections, however, and was neutropenic a few times.

Support your friend. Encourage her to continue her battle.

Chemotheraphy is very hard on the body. The reason is they are trying to kill tissue that is almost identical to her own tissue. The only difference is the relative speed at which the tissue reproduces.

It would be very nice to have a simple and clean way to treat things, like antibiotics, but right now they just don't have such a way of doing it.

A Sarcoma is a connective and support tissue cancer. Occasionally manifest as bone cancer. It wouldn't be visible until extremely late in the disease. Be thankful it's not visible.

The doctors know what they are doing. If you think about it, most cancer you cannot see with the naked eye. Im a little puzzled by that statement? Chemo is poision. There are side effects. The sores in her mouth are on her skin are fairly normal. Her immune system is down due to the chemo. Her doctors will decrease the dosage if its neccessary depending on her lab results. Different cancers demand different chemotherapy. I know you are concerned but let the doctors to thier job. I had many side effects from my treatment. It was all normal considering what Chemo is. Like I said, its poison. She should expect side effects.

I also have a friend undergoing chemo (she is 31). I don't know what they are giving to your friend (carboplatin and cisplatin are the most used first line treatments, so that is probably that, alone or in combination), but mouth sores are pretty usual. Tell her to get a good antibacterial/antifungal mouthwash, and they should go away in 2-3 days.

Chemo treatment makes you go neutropenic, meaning, suppresses your immune system. So it is VERY important for her to be especially careful, mostly 7 to 10 days after each chemo dose. People with contagious infections (flu, cough, diarrhea...) should not visit her during this period, and everybody should wash their hands with antibacterial wash (alcohol-based hand washing gel is very useful for that) as soon as they enter her house.

Yes chemo is toxic, but it is the only treatment that has efficiency against what she has. The doctors give it has much as she can support it to have as much chances as possible to kill the tumor before it spreads to the rest of her body. They are probably checking her blood before each treatment to see if she is doing well enough to support it.

What she should do to better support the side effects is to have a healthy diet of foods that will strengten her, as much as possible when she is able to eat. All cancer-fighting foods, such as japanese green tea, berries, pomegranate, cabbage (if her digestion allows it), turmeric and others should be part of her food habits. Also, red meat and liver (I have been told that rabbit liver is especially good by an oncologist) are an excellent, digestive system-friendly way to raise her red blood cell count, which is also decreased by chemo. Another aspect of chemo is that it kills friendly bacteria in the intestine, making you more susceptible to catch diarrhea-causing bacteria. A way to avoid that is to have probiotics, ie replacement bacteria. You can find this in low, supportive doses in active-culture yogurts such as kefir (russian-style yogurt), and more concentrated dose can be found in pill form in your local natural food store. A quality supplement will have a balanced amount of different strains, and has to be kept in the fridge (dont buy probiotics that are kept at room temperature, those contain almost no living bacteria). This will also strengten her immune system.
